What are veneers?
Traditional veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are customized to make the patient’s teeth appear whiter and more uniform. Porcelain is a very durable material, and patients can often go twenty years or longer without repairing or replacing their veneers! When you come in for your consultation, we will listen to your concerns about the way your teeth currently look and design each veneer to look nice yet natural. Veneers can also be used to make the teeth appear straighter and more symmetrical and help patients achieve a “Hollywood” smile.
Are veneers permanent?
Before porcelain veneers can be placed, some of the enamel from the front of the teeth must be removed so that each veneer can fit properly and look natural. Tooth enamel is what protects the teeth from harmful bacteria and decay, so once it is removed, a dental restoration of some kind must always be used to protect the teeth. Veneers are very reliable restorations that last for many years, and we always work with each patient to ensure that their veneers look exactly how they want so that they never want their veneers to be removed!
Should I get a crown, a veneer, or another service?
If you need one or more front teeth restored, you may be deciding between a crown or a veneer. Crowns are more cost-effective but do not last as long as veneers. Veneers are very customizable and do not require as much of the natural tooth to be removed. In cases where patients just want to enhance the cosmetic appearance of their teeth, sometimes they find that professional teeth whitening is all that they need to reach their smile goals.
