How Can I Reduce Waste While Caring for My Smile?

At North Richland Hills Dentistry, we believe in reducing waste whenever possible. Often, our patients are surprised to learn just how damaging to the environment oral healthcare can be. With the health of our planet in mind, we’ve put together the following tips on how to you can care for the planet while also caring for your pearly whites.

Conserve Water

Did you know that letting the tap run while brushing your teeth can waste up to 200 gallons of water each month? There’s no need to let that precious water run while you’re brushing your teeth, so turn the tap off until you’re ready to rinse. If you have kids, make sure they learn to turn off the faucet, too. Your water bill and the planet will thank you!

Use Natural Materials

At your local natural store, you’re bound to find toothbrushes made from bamboo, toothpaste made from mint, and other products designed with the environment and your health in mind. For example, instead of using floss made from nylon that is not biodegradable, choose silk floss that can be composted. You’ll avoid using plastic and chemicals while getting the same quality of oral care.

Recycle

If you’re not ready to take the plunge to natural dental products, consider recycling your plastic products when you’re finished with them. Plastic toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, floss containers, and packaging can be recycled through programs like Terracycle. While you’re at it, why not repurpose your old toothbrushes to clean hard to reach areas or unusually shaped items around the house?

Could the Future of Dentistry Be Drill-Less?

At North Richland Hills Family Dentistry, our well-qualified team understands that dental anxiety is a real concern for many patients, so we strive to provide a comfortable, welcoming environment. In addition to amenities like HD televisions in each treatment room that let you watch your favorite TV show or movies, pillows, and cozy blankets, we use the latest technology to ensure that your experience at our office is efficient and as painless as possible. However, dental visits may become even more comfortable with future technology; one of the most promising areas of developing technology is drill-less dentistry.

Why Avoid the Drill?

We understand that many of our patients dislike the sound and feel of a dentist’s drill. Although necessary in some situations, the sensation and smell can be unpleasant. In order to prevent patients from having to undergo treatment with a dental drill, scientists are working toward perfecting drill-less dentistry options that provide the same quality of care without needing a drill.

What Is Drill-Less Dentistry?

Drill-less dentistry uses high-tech equipment in the place of a traditional dental drill. Right now, two types of technology are being implemented: lasers and air abrasion. Lasers heat up water molecules inside the tooth and dislodge any built-up decay while leaving healthy enamel intact. Even more amazing, the laser reduces the risk of infection by sterilizing the surface it touches. Air abrasion blasts the tooth with very small particles that remove decay on the tooth also without needing a drill.

How Can I Protect Myself From Tooth Decay?

In order to protect yourself from needing any treatment for severe tooth decay (drill or drill-less), you should practice a good preventive care routine. Brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time, floss each day, and visit our office regularly for cleanings and exams.
