What to Do In a Dental Emergency?

Tooth Pain

If you're experiencing tooth pain, the most common causes include debris lodged between teeth or below the gum line, lost fillings, cracked or broken teeth, damaged restorations, or infections. We recommend brushing and flossing thoroughly to check for trapped particles and coming to our office as soon as possible. Our team can examine your smile to find the cause of your tooth pain and help you get the relief you deserve.

Knocked-Out Tooth

For a permanent knocked-out tooth, the sooner you get to the dentist the better. When a tooth is out of its socket, the root can die. If possible, gently rinse the tooth off and place it back in the socket. Carefully bite down on a piece of clean gauze to keep it in place while you head to our office. If you can't put it back, place it in a cup of milk or saltwater to keep the root alive.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

We recommend picking up the pieces from your broken tooth and gently rinse them off with warm water. Contact us right away to let us know that you're coming in for an emergency visit. Please bring the pieces of your tooth (if possible) to our office in a cup of milk or saltwater. Sometimes, we can reattach broken portions of the tooth.

Emergency Dentistry FAQs

What should I expect during a dental emergency visit?

Every emergency visit varies depending on the circumstance. Usually, we start off with taking X-rays to get more insight into your dental injury. Next, Dr. Desai will walk you through your treatment options and work with you to decide which one is best for you. Then, we'll provide you same-day treatment to get your smile back up and running in no time!

Can an emergency dentist extract a tooth?

We always strive to preserve your natural teeth. However, there are some situations in which a tooth extraction is the best course of action to preserve your oral health. If you need an emergency extraction, don't worry. We'll also go over your tooth replacement options to give you back a complete smile.

Is emergency dental care covered by insurance?

It depends on your insurance plan because every provider is different. If you're unsure about whether or not emergency dental care is covered, one of our financial coordinators can look into it for you. If you're not covered, don't stress. We offer a variety of financial options to help you fit the urgent dental care you need into your budget!

Can I be sedated during a dental emergency visit?

Yes, you can! In fact, we offer sedation dentistry to ensure that you have a comfortable emergency visit. From nitrous oxide to oral conscious sedation to IV sedation, we have various levels of sedation to help patients with dental anxiety and those undergoing complex procedures or treatments.
